About Eliza Carthy and the Wayward Band

‘’Bold, funny and subversive..Those who think folk is quiet music for dull bearded blokes will have their illusions shattered by the stomp of Big Machine, the brassy, Kurt Weill-ish cabaret tune that’s the title track of her new album’’

The Telegraph (live review)

If there is one musician who embodies the dynamism and vitality of the current English folk revival, it’s Eliza Carthy. Admired by traditionalists and modernists alike, Eliza’s trailblazing contribution for the past 25 years has influenced a whole generation of young musicians and earnt her an MBE for services to music. She’s toured and recorded with a dazzling array of artists and in every conceivable form, but in 2013, Eliza fulfilled one of her ambitions by assembling The Wayward Band, a suitably talented group of 12 musicians from around the UK. Together they set out on the road to promote her ‘Best of’ compilation, ‘Wayward Daughter’ (Topic Records). Eliza and The Wayward Band quickly became a festival favourites and their enjoyment in playing together is there for all to see. Their debut album, ‘Big Machine’, recorded at Real World Studios, was released to considerable critical acclaim by Topic Records early in 2017.
